April is national poetry month

Now is your chance to get creative. Go to a poetry slam. Get in the beat. Have some fun with poetry.

So you might ask yourself, where do I begin? Well, emotion has a lot to do with poems. Putting your feelings in motion, sort of. You might want to check out How to write a poem. It just might help.

One of my favorite books on writing poetry is Poemcrazy. You might also want to check out the Poetry Home Repair Manuel by Ted Kooser.  Or some other wonderful and helpful books like Ordinary Genius, and In the Palm of your Hand.

Usually, this month you will find Poetry Slams going on at your local library and even a bookstores. It could open a whole new window of opportunity for you. There are even books on that. Poetry Slam and Take the Mic. These are books to help you learn how to give impressive spoken word performances.

If that's not enough, sink your teeth into a poetry novel. Sharp Teeth by Toby Barlow is told in an interesting verse about an ordinary dog catcher who meets a werewolf, but doesn't quite know it.

Sonja Sones has to be my all time favorite when it comes to the gift of poetry through storytelling. I'm quite fond of What my Girlfriend Doesn't Know and Stop Pretending. What are some of your favorite poetry books?
